About the Project – 50 Inspiring Women of Gujarat by the K D Blossom team. ‘The mission is to take portraits of 50 women from 50 dimensions along with their journey to achievements and document them as a book. A strong story has the Impact to transform people. While we see the tip of the iceberg, what we fail to see is the work, intention, sacrifices, patience, resilience, and all that went behind. ‘We want to tell the world the other part of the iceberg as we all need Inspiring and relatable stories for us to read and get inspired from’. – Amar Ramesh

Invited Artist at the Raja Ravi Varma Studio, in the Laxmi Vilas Palace Vadodara, by Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) Vadodara. Curated & executed an Art installation ‘101 Horses’ – as part of the Studio Takeover in collaboration with the Potter community.

A lecture  at the Memorial Lecture commemorating the Birth Anniversary of Late Dr. Krishna Ahooja Patel. This event was jointly organised by the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) India and the Education Faculty of Gujarat Vidyapith in Ahmedabad.

Spin Off Magazine (Fall2024)

Authored by Avani Varia, the artile “Takli, Charkha, Khadi: Spindle-Spun Yarns in Indian Textiles,” is featured in the Fall 2024 issue of Spin Off Magazine by the Long Theard Media, Fort Collins, CO, USA.

A special edition dived deep into the art of ‘spindle and spinner’, celebrating the timeless craft of spinning yarn. Here I share about my experiences and experiments with Box Charkha, Takli using various natural fibers and creating exclusive Khadi & other handmade designer products.

“India’s Vanishing Traditions” article is about the handspun yarn making tradition of the camel herder community based in Kutch, Gujarat in India. I am pursuing an independent research of ‘handspun yarn making in India’ and this article is based on my ongoing research.

This paper looks at the Museum environment in India with a focus on development and the need for a stronger understanding of the Experience economy. With India’s rapid rise in world economic rankings and burgeoning middle class, there is a need to develop museums in a way that taps into the tourism and hospitality market economy but more significantly, to represent the Indian Culture and Heritage in a light of contemporary design.

‘Chalo Charkho Ramiye’ – a book about handspinning & Box Charkha

It is published by Navajivan Trust, Ahmedabad, India.

The book is authored by Avani and explores a range of technical aspects related to hand-spinning using the Box Charkha (commonly known as Yerwada Chakra or Peti Retiyo in Gujarati). It also discusses the connection between Khadi and hand-spinning, and their links to education, health, and self-reliance.

Avani originally wrote the book in her mother tongue, Gujarati, and later translated it herself into Hindi and English.

Avani authored article with above title for ‘Parampara‘ (Traditional Paniyary, a sacred water space) – a book on India’s climate friendly and sustainable practices. Prime Minister Narendra Modi releasing ‘Parampara’ at the Paris conference. Publication was exclusively part of the International Climate Change Conference Paris in 2015.

I have been researching the traditional Varia community of potters over the past few years, focusing on understanding the changes, challenges, and opportunities facing this traditional art form in contemporary times.
