The name VARIA is of a community with long-standing tradition of pottery from the north-eastern regions of Gujarat in India, including Dahod, Kheda, Panchmahal, Vadodara, and Zabua districts. These skilled artisans, known as the Varia potters, have passed down their craft through generations, creating a rich cultural heritage.

I, Avani, come from a family of Varia potters, and I am proud to carry on this legacy. Growing up, I spent much of my childhood playing with clay alongside my grandparents, learning the craft directly from them and other elders in the community—just as the tradition has been passed down through generations in India.

Since past few years, I am documenting the changes in the Varia community’s craft while also working to market the products created by these talented artisans. I aspire to create programs that engage the youth of the community, encouraging them to continue this age-old craft. I am also focused to encourage children to learn from their practicing elders, ensuring the survival and adaptation of this art form for future generations in the context of contemporary life.
